Laser hair removal fact:

In 1995, the FDA cleared laser hair removal treatment for the first time using Nd:YAG lasers.

Is laser hair removal dangerous?

As with any medical treatment, the use of lasers can have some side effects. However, side effects have been minor and manageable in clinical use.

Will I need more than one procedure?
Your hair grows in cycles, however, not all of your hair is on the same cycle. Laser treatments are made to attack hair that is in the active growth, or anagen, stage of its cycle. Therefore you will almost always need more than one procedure to completely treat one area, no matter how big or small it may be. The more procedures you have the better your outcome will be each time.

What about tanning/sun exposure during treatments?
All laser hair removal candidates should be at their lightest skin tone at the time of treatment. Having even the slightest tan can make it harder for the laser light to pass through your skin in order to heat the hair follicle. Being a light skinned person with a light tan makes the treatment more difficult than being a darker skinned person who has no tan or sun exposure at all. Your practitioner may even give you a topical bleaching cream to apply in the days or weeks before your appointment and regular sunscreen use is recommended.

What if I have Herpes?
The heat from the laser light can cause a herpes infection to become active if it is in the location of the area to be treated. Any such infection should be discussed with you practitioner before treatment begins.

What if I have a history of scarring?
Scarring is usually not of high concern to those that do not have this kind of history, but if you do then you should discuss it with your practitioner before the procedure begins.

Will it hurt?
The pain of the laser moving across your skin is slightly painful but mostly tolerable. It is rare that a topical anesthetic is required unless your skin is particularly sensitive.

Is Laser Hair Removal available for teenagers?
A teenager with unwanted hair might not want to shave just yet, or use wax and other methods because these methods can encourage more rapid hair growth in a teen whose body is not fully mature. Laser hair removal is an option to consider, but should be decided by both the parent and the teen. All laser hair removal clinics require a parent or legal guardian's consent to perform the procedure on a child under 18 years of age.

Can I still remove hair between treatments?

You may shave, use a depilatory cream or trim hairs. However, you should not use waxing, electrolysis or plucking or any method that removes the hair from the follicles.
